This is awesome. Love the idea of a chess board. The rook model looks really good and clean. I assume the black piece is a queen and can move in any direction. Might be interesting to incorporate a bishop that can only move diagonally. Also, the end state of capturing the king is brilliant.
Texture of the checkerboard and mixture of wood is great.
To remove the red text, Build Lighting first and then use the high res screenshot feature.
Also, you can likely remove the directional light to avoid the shadowing. The basic lightmass should illuminate the scene enough.
